Preparatory Courses for Foreign Students

The training of experts for foreign states in the educational establishments of Ukraine is one of the major strategic directions of Ukraine foreign policy and foreign trade activities. Foreign citizens education and preparation for entering higher educational establishments is the first and extremely necessary issue of all educational process of foreign students pre-training for any higher educational establishment of Ukraine, for ОNАT in particular.

The structural unit, which is responsible for training foreigners for entering higher educational establishments of Ukraine in ONAT, is Preparatory Department (PD) for foreigners.

PD for foreigners licensed for up to 100 people was established in ONAT in 1998. Further activity in this direction was held according to the licenses of State Commission on Academic Degrees and Titles (SCADT) of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (№ 6883 dd. 30.12.1999, № 429340 dd. 15.04.2003 № 867761 dd. 02.11.2004). In June 2009 the regular license expert appraisal of the PD activity was done for foreigners, and on July the 2nd 2009 at the SCADT meeting (minutes № 79) the decision was made to extend the license for up to 150 people for training foreigners entering the higher educational establishments for the 10 year period.

During the last 12 years of the PD existence more than 500 foreigners received certificates which gave them the right to enter higher educational establishments of Ukraine.

The main task of ONAT PD is the foreign applicants training for successful study at the Academy in accordance with their specialization, as well as their studying at other higher educational establishments of Ukraine in engineering, engineering-economic and humanitarian specializations.

Structurally PD consists of the head of the unit who is directly subordinate to the International Relations Vice-Rector and two skilled resource specialists, who organize and supervise scientific-methodological and educational work at PD in language training, humanitarian and natural-science disciplines. The major focuses of their activity, except other organizational-supervising activities (for example, educational process scheduling, lectures and practical classes scheduling, etc.) is the coordination of the Russian (Ukrainian) language teaching. They are also responsible for natural-science and humanitarian disciplines according to educational and working programs, the control of the same language usage in the educational process and continuity of the taught subjects contents which are learnt at PD in a certain specialization.

Nowadays Karpova S.A., an Associate Professor of the Ukrainian and Russian languages Chair, manages the PD. An Associate Professor Karpova S.A. is a skilled lecturer (the experience of her scientific and pedagogical work makes up 33 years). She specializes in the peculiarities of the Russian and Ukrainian languages teaching methods as of a foreign language at the initial stage (she published 28 study guides and scientific works). Karpova S.A. has the ability to organize work which allows her to select the stuff successfully and to manage the work in PD effectively.

The educational process at ОNАT PD is carried out according to Preparatory Departments and their subdivisions curricula and the academic programs recommended by the Scientific and Methodological Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. They refer to foreign citizens’ training and education at entering higher educational establishments. Working programs on each discipline are annually updated and approved by ONAT Scientific and Methodological Council. PD methodologists plan educational process schedules for each separate group, they also carry out the constant control over lecturers’ curricula and working programs execution.

The knowledge quality control system is constantly being improved, basic subjects quizes and self-studying tasks and tests are worked out and published.

ONAT special Chairs provide the teaching of disciplines at PD. The Chair of the Ukrainian and Russian languages provides teaching of the Ukrainian (Russian) language, the Ukrainian and foreign literature basics and national studies, the Chair of Math teaches Mathematics, the Chair of Physics - Physics, Data Technologies Chair - the basics of Information Science and Processing Devices, etc.). The Chairs trust certain lecturers to work at PD, that is subordinate to the Department Head. The lecturers staff engaged to work at PD is a permanent one. The percentage of PH.D lecturers at PD is 53,1% at the moment. All the lectures working at PD with foreigners are very experienced ones. They improved their skills in the leading higher educational establishments of Ukraine many times. All lecturers at PD take part in state budget scientific-research work of the Ukrainian and Russian languages Chair and also in a work of a scientific- methodological seminar of the same Chair. The problems of educational process advancing and improvement of foreign citizens training effectiveness for higher educational establishment entering is a constant subject of presentations and discussions of the seminar. The results of the scientific researches and their publications at ONAT collections of scientific articles and other publications are the subjects of the seminar as well. During the last 5 years the lectures working at PD created and published 23 study guides. They are actively used in the educational process. ”Studying the History of Ukraine”. Pedagogical work with foreigners has its own important role in PD work.

The lecturers of the Ukrainian and Russian languages Chairs are the tutors. They explain and educate, get foreigners acquainted with local real life, visit the hostel, keep in touch with their students’ parents, help foreigners to adapt easily to staying in Ukraine. They do it together with their educational job. Great attention in PD work is given to the development of PD financial resources. The Department is fully provided with places for education for all the term. The total area of classes equipped for training foreigners is 390 square meters. Among them there is a computer class, equipped with 10 personal computers connected to the Internet and 14 classrooms to study. They are locally situated and equipped according to their target aim (Ukrainian and Foreign Literature classroom, History and Geography classroom, Nature Sciences classroom). They have a lot of visual educational material. There is also enough of other educational technical facilities. They are in the Linguistic centre (wide-screen TV set “Philips” 32 pw 8620/12, DVD player, overhead projector with a screen, 4 personal computers and a laptop). They are also intensively used for lessons. All the above mentioned staff gives the possibility to vary the forms of educational and pedagogical and improve the training quality of foreigners entering the higher educational establishments in Ukraine, in ONAT particularly in main educational streamlines.
